Alfred Hrdlicka studied from 1946 to 1957 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. His first exhibition "Sculpture, Painting and Graphics" took place in the Zedlitzhalle in Vienna, four years later he participated together with Herbert Boeckl as representative of Austria at the 32nd Venice Biennale. Since then, Hrdlicka's works, which form one of the most important artistic positions in Austria, can be seen in numerous international exhibitions. The focus of Hrdlicka's artistic work is on the human figure, endangered by threats, anxiety, pain, suffering and psychological borderline situations.
